About the Peconic Star Fleet

Operating out of Greenpoint, Long Island since 1982, the Peconic Star Fleet has some of the richest boating history in New York.

Captain Matt

From the streets to the Fleet

Captain Matt’s journey to the helm began far from the salt air, being born in Allentown, Pa and living in Eastern Pennsylvania. It was there that his father first introduced him to the art of fishing at the family farm at the age of 3. They would spend weekends and spare time chasing trout and bass at the pond. As he grew they switched from the pond to donning waders and catching trout in the creeks and streams of Northeast Pennsylvania.

His path was forever changed during childhood visits to his grandfather on Long Island. A trip to Captree State Park introduced him to the world of saltwater bottom fishing and the iconic mahogany and varnished boats that line the docks. Matt fell in love with those classic vessels immediately, sparking a lifelong aspiration to live his life on the water. Matt has lived on Long Island since 1983 and has been saltwater bottom fishing ever since. He has owned and operated multiple boats for over 30 years and holds a USCG Master Near Coastal 100 ton Captain license. After spending 27 years in law enforcement and retiring in 2019 Matt has made fishing his full time occupation, transitioning from the office to the rail and helm of boats. Today, he brings that decades-long passion and a deep respect for maritime tradition to every guest, ensuring they experience the same magic he felt as a child standing on the Captree docks.

Our History

The story of the Peconic Star Fleet is a tale of maritime tradition on the North Fork of Long Island. For over four decades, our vessels have been a fixture at the Railroad Dock in Greenport, serving as a gateway for generations of anglers and adventurers.

Founding and Early Years (1982 – 1985)

The fleet was established in 1982, quickly becoming a cornerstone of the Greenport waterfront. Founded during a golden era for local maritime commerce, the business focused on providing reliable access to the prolific waters of Peconic Bay and the Long Island Sound. The operation was built on a foundation of local knowledge and a passion for the unique fishing grounds surrounding the North Fork.

The Era of Capt. Dave Brennan (1986 – 2021)

In 1986 Capt. David Brennan purchased the Peconic Star II, a vessel with a storied past as a former Army rescue boat. Under his leadership, the fleet evolved into a premier destination for both the serious angler and the casual vacationer.

  • Innovation on the Water: The fleet became known for its “super cruisers,” which featured modern navigation, heated cabins, and spacious sundecks.
  • Expanding Horizons: In 2010, the Suffolk Times documented the launch of the Peconic Star Express, a high speed aluminum cruiser that began offering popular excursions to Block Island.
  • Community Fixture: For over 30 years, Capt. Brennan steered the company through changing regulations and shifting fish populations, maintaining a reputation for cleanliness and “full boat limits” of porgies and sea bass.

Transition and New Leadership (2021 – 2025)

Ownership eventually transitioned to Capt. Arnold “Speedy” Hubert During this period, the fleet continued its mission as a beloved party boat operation, running daily trips for porgies, Seabass, and weakfish. However, the business faced significant challenges regarding its long term lease at the village owned dock. In September 2025, the Suffolk Times reported the fleet would cease operations after 43 years due to these leasing disputes, a move that drew widespread concern from the local community.

The 2026 Revival (Present Day)

The story did not end at the Railroad Dock. Following intensive negotiations with the Village of Greenport, a new chapter began. As reported by the Suffolk Times, the Peconic Star Fleet is poised for a grand return. We are proud to announce our reopening on May 1, 2026, featuring a newly commissioned 80 foot Yank Marine vessel. This modern charter boat represents our commitment to the future of fishing and tourism on Long Island.
